ABC Network has failed us once again. They brought us half a decade of suspense with Lost, and took us down a thrilling roller coaster with Heroes. But now, at the pinnacle of popular television, the ever-suspenseful Happy Town, a spectacular magical mystery/drama show trying to get its footing has been cancelled after only 8 episodes.
I thought that this show would’ve struck the big bucks when I saw the pilot in early May. It has everything a thriller needs: the rich old widow who commands evil deeds and minions, the serial murderer who no one knows by name, and of course… the bright-eyed townsfolk on which these two menaces prey upon. If a show like this came on the air years ago I guarantee a large fanbase would have matriculated to the small screen every Tuesday night.
Unfortunately, many failed mystery-thriller series have passed us by recently, and few are willing to give another Twin Peak/FlashForward carbon copy a try. The show is losing viewers not because of it’s genre, but moreso because the audience base these days demands shallow, ignorant comedy on weeknights… any form of critical thinking would be too difficult for them. Sadly, future thought-provoking epicness will continue to be shelved if the lazy, all-American idiot demographic continues to dominate our major network stations.
Goodnight, Happy Town, you will be missed.
